The Imperial Prince Regent Shohtoku
He was a son of the Emperor Yomei, while his posthumous name was Prince Umayado
(horse stable). He became the Imperial Prince Regent of Emperess Suiko, taking
that position rather than ascending as Emperor. He established the 17 Article
Constitution, the world's first constitutional form of rule based on Buddhistic
principles, as well as the 12 official Ranks as a regent. He established the
foundation of Japanese Buddhism, developing and propagating Buddhist doctrine,
without entering the priesthood in his life. He is often artistically depicted
with long hair in a monk's robes, signifying his integration of a very advanced
spiritual understanding as a layman.
