Tariki(the Other-Power)
Tariki is a tricky concept for people steeped in monotheistic religion. They
easily confuse it with the monotheistic "God" figure of Western
mythology. Tariki does not mean a God-like figure outside of the world, but
simply "another power". As another power, tariki means a power other
than the deep seated, habitual self-centeredness that defeats any true
compassion and real love in our lives. Tariki implies getting outside of
yourself, getting beyond your confining self-obsession.
For Shin Buddhism, tariki means gaining trust in depending on Honganriki
(Freeing Compassionate Power of Hongan) of Amida. Amida is born of the desire
that all men and creatures on earth should be equal on the border of Nehan or
Nirvana .Yet it never means depending on the other people or giving up efforts
and devotions. The monotheistic idea of giving your life over to God's will is
not implied here; instead, one takes refuge in or surrenders diminishing
self-centeredness in favor of the supreme value of boundless compassion. For
Amida is the power of unconditional compassion.
