| "Faith" -What I think highly of, What I seek for- (2) |
You do not see too many of those who stop you and ask you questions such as, "Do you believe in the Supreme Being?" in town or around train stations anymore, but many of you have probably experienced being asked these sort of questions in the past. I, myself, have been approached numerous times. I usually said that I was busy and did not take the time to answer their questions. However, one day I was casually asked by a friend of mine, "Do you believe in Buddha?" I answered, "Of course, I do." Then he asked me again, "How?" When he asked me this question, I had to stop and really think.
Shin Buddhism teaches, "If you receive Amida Buddha's heart and chant the Nembutsu, you will definitely be liberated and enter the Bliss Realm." hat is the definition of "Receiving Buddha's heart?" What is "Being liberated and entering the Bliss Realm"? As I sought deeper into the content of my faith in Buddhism and contemplated, one thing suddenly came to my mind. I realized the fact that I had never taken a moment to seriously pursue the detailed meaning of Believing in Buddha's liberating power." It had gradually become a habitual practice. Before we parted, my friend said to me, "You are fortunate to be able to believe in Buddha's liberating power." Once again, his comment led me to a deep thought. I questioned myself, "Am I really fortunate to be able to believe in Buddha?" "Do I feel joy or pleasure by believing in Buddha?"
Later, by reading the ninth chapter of "Tannisho", I felt like the heavy cloud above my head was lifted. The content of the chapter is as follows; Yuienbo, one of Shinran's disciples questioned, "I do not feel overjoyed by chanting the Nembutsu, neither do I feel like going to the Bliss Realm in a hurry. Why is that?"Shinran replied, "I used to feel the same way, Yuienbo. However, Buddha's unconditional desire to liberate us, the ordinary people who can not easily accept Amida Buddha's gracious heart of making the pledge to save any person, even a bad person. This is absolute. The reason why we have we have difficulty accepting the Buddha's relief is because of worldly passions we possess. Buddha's relief is because of worldly passions we possess. Buddha's pledge to save all of us, the ordinary people even with those worldly passions is absolutely unconditional.
Although I believe in the Buddha's teaching, I still could not feel the joy of pleasure of believing because of the worldly passions existing within myself. However, I was finally convinced that the Buddha, seeing through everything, had made an unconditional pledge to save me, even me who is covered with all of the worldly passions. At the same time I felt the eagerness to learn more about Amida Buddha's preaching which Shinran was resonant with. Then I felt that it is my mission to pass this preaching on to many more people that I may be in contact with.
